Description

Kenzie Academy is a coding bootcamp with courses open to San Francisco residents online. This coding bootcamp offers classes in software engineering, digital marketing, and user experience (UX) engineering, and offers students an opportunity to take a part-time technical support job while completing coursework. The job opportunity offered by Kenzie Academy is a work-from-home position, so location is not an issue for most students. The part-time job program, along with income share agreements, is part of Kenzie Academy’s goal to reduce the financial burden of getting an education.

Additional Info

The Kenzie Academy curriculum varies between programs. The shortest program, digital marketing, focuses on content marketing, strategies, and organic and paid-platforms. Kenzie Academy is currently in the process of reformatting its digital marketing program, so be sure to check the website for updates as they move along with the process. The full-time software engineering bootcamp is designed to teach students front and back end web development. The program covers common coding languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, SQL, Django, and React. The user experience engineering program also features coding languages used in full stack development but focuses primarily on application development and website design.

Unlike some other online coding bootcamps, Kenzie Academy’s remote program is not self-paced. Students must commit to (and attend) online courses full-time during the day for most programs. The software engineering and user experience engineering classes take place from 9 AM to 5 PM (EDT) Monday through Friday, but students with family or work commitments are permitted to dismiss themselves at 3:00 PM. For San Francisco students, classes occur from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with dismissal at noon for students with other obligations. Programs last either six months or a year, except digital marketing which is six months only.

Kenzie Academy has more than a dozen employment partners, and the institution publishes some student outcome data on its website. The site claims that the majority of its students received a job offer prior to graduation and that their average salaries were between $55,000 and $90,000 annually.

Kenzie Academy’s coding bootcamp programs range in price, but they do offer a free course called ‘Kenzie Free.’ The lowest-priced course offered by Kenzie Academy is its digital marketing bootcamp. The digital marketing course starts at $13,500 upfront, but financing and income share agreements are also available for this course. Students either finance tuition through Kenzie’s payment plan, or they can opt for the income share agreement with a down-payment or ‘commitment fee’ of $100. The income share agreement for this program requires a commitment of 17.5% of student income for 25 months after landing a job. Students can choose to pay off Kenzie Academy’s income share agreements early or opt for a half-ISA on some programs. Kenzie Academy’s software engineering and user experience engineering programs cost $13,500 for the six-month program and $24,000 for the year-long program upfront, $2,150 per month, or 17.5% of post-employment income for four years through the income share agreement. For these programs, students can opt for the half-ISA for $12,000 down—the half-ISA ends in 25 months instead of four years.

Kenzie offers a hands-on learning environment where you learn by doing rather than sitting in front of a lecturer and trying to retain that information. You learn how to learn fast.I love this project based learning aspect at Kenzie. The environment is great. Instructors are super supportive and go above and beyond. You not only learn to code but you will also learn the soft skills needed . Overall my experience at Kenzie so far is amazing. The curriculum is current. Anybody who wants to become a software developer should consider Kenzie.

Kenzie Academy is a great place for learning. They welcome students from diverse backgrounds to learn useful skills in a meaningful way that will actually prepare you for the “real” world. They teach skills that you cannot learn in a month long bootcamp and provide a more well-rounded experience than you can find anywhere else. The first year is front/back end development and the second year is a paid internship. You cannot find this kind of educational set up anywhere else. They also offer an income share agreement that will keep you free from student loan debt. For me, Kenzie Academy was pretty much a no-brainer when I decided it was time to take a drastic step in advancing my career potential.

I applied to the marketing program and right away scheduled my interview. The day of I needed to reschedule and made appointment for next day. I received a confirmation that J****** was looking forward to speaking to me. The day of few hours before scheduled time, my interview was cancelled without any real explanation. SO I scheduled my discovery call with A****. The next day AGAIN my interview was cancelled, this time I was told that the school is not doing any marketing interviews for now and they will reach out to me when they are ready. Pretty shady and disappointing to say the least!

Something else that is concerning that both J****** and A****, communicated from A****’s email address. In the intro email that I received, it said that next cohort started in April, yet A**** the October one was still open.

Judging from everyone’s great reviews, I am thinking that maybe this has happened to me, because of my age. The school’s application does ask for age. Maybe I just have bad luck or this place is not for me. Either way, when and IF the school reaches out to me, I will not be scheduling my interview based on this poor experience so far.
